Dr. Sanjay Kakar is a Professor in Anatomic Pathology at UCSF and Benedict Yen Endowed Professor and Chief of Pathology at VA Medical. He went to medical school and did his initial pathology training in India before moving to the USA, where he completed his residency training at University of Illinois at Chicago, followed by a fellowship in GI and liver pathology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Dr. Kakar joined the pathology department at the VA and UCSF in 2002. He has led numerous clinical and translational studies in GI and liver pathology, and has published a text book in liver pathology. Dr. Kakar has served as the President of the United States GI Pathology Society and is a member of the College of American Pathologists Cancer Protocol Review Board and Cancer Committee, which standardizes the terminology and prognostic factors for the reporting of GI and liver cancers. His chief research interests include hepatocellular adenoma, hepatocellular carcinoma, and colorectal cancer. Affiliations: Benedict S.
