Dr. Deshpande is a gastrointestinal pathologist with research and clinical interests focused on benign and inflammatory diseases of the pancreas including a newly described disease, IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD).  IgG-RD was initially identified in the pancreas, but has now been shown to involve virtually every organ system. He has published a number of ground-breaking papers in this area, teaches locally, nationally, and internationally. Most recently, he has been working on developing internationally accepted guidelines for the diagnosis of this disease. He also serves as Director of the Tumor Repository at the Massachusetts General Hospital and direct the tissue microarray facility.
